The Data Protection Act 1998 details how personal data may legally be used. Research data must be dealt with in accordance with the Act. It applies to personal information, which must be processed in accordance with eight data protection principles.

The majority of research projects carried out in the NHS involve the use of personal data to some extent. There is much confusion over exactly what counts as personal data, and therefore what is covered by the Act. This module describes what is considered personal data in research and describes how to comply with the Act in your working environment. We will look at the data protection principles, the rights of data subjects, the trans-border data flow and the potential impact on clinical trials.

This module is aimed at anyone involved in the set-up, conduct, reporting or data analysis of a clinical trial. It will also provide the data protection principles required to satisfy the regulatory and legal requirements.

The programme is clear and simple in design and gives full instructions for use.
